Base oils are the main ingredient of finished lubricants, usually making up 70 to 99% of the blend. They are sorted into groups by their refining process and quality.
Group I
SN-150 · SN-500 · SN-600 · Bright Stock
Solvent refined mineral oils. Economical choice for industrial oils, greases, gear oils and conventional engine oils.
Group II
150N · 500N · and other viscosities
Hydroprocessed oils with low sulphur and high saturates. Used in modern engine oils, hydraulic oils and transformer oils.
Group III
3 cSt · 4 cSt · 6 cSt · 8 cSt and others
Highly refined oils with a very high viscosity index. Used in synthetic-technology and fuel-economy engine oils.
Specifications
The API groups are defined by their saturates, sulphur and viscosity index. The final product specification is agreed in the contract and confirmed by the independent inspector's report.
API Base Oil Groups
| Group | Saturates (%) | Sulphur (%) | Viscosity index |
|---|---|---|---|
| Group I | below 90 | above 0.03 | 80 – 119 |
| Group II | 90 or above | 0.03 or below | 80 – 119 |
| Group III | 90 or above | 0.03 or below | 120 or above |
Typical Group I Grades

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Viscosity @ 40°C (cSt) | 28 – 32 | 90 – 105 | per contract | ASTM D445 |
| Viscosity @ 100°C (cSt) | 5.0 – 5.5 | 10.5 – 11.5 | 30 – 33 | ASTM D445 |
| Viscosity index | min 95 | min 95 | min 95 | ASTM D2270 |
| Flash point, COC (°C) | min 200 | min 240 | min 280 | ASTM D92 |
| Pour point (°C) | max -9 | max -6 | max -3 | ASTM D97 |
| Colour (ASTM) | max 1.5 | max 2.5 | max 5.0 | ASTM D1500 |
| Sulphur (% m/m) | above 0.03 | above 0.03 | above 0.03 | ASTM D4294 |
Group II and Group III oils are supplied against the producer's own typical data sheet for each viscosity grade. Values are typical and vary by refinery. Cargo quality is established by independent inspection at the load port.
