Bitumen is the heavy residue left after crude oil distillation. It is graded by how hard or soft it is and how it behaves with temperature.
Penetration Grade
40/50 · 60/70 · 80/100 · 85/100 · 100/150
The most widely traded range, used for road paving and general asphalt. Lower numbers are harder.
Viscosity Grade
VG-10 · VG-20 · VG-30 · VG-40
Graded by viscosity at 60°C. Used mainly in India and nearby markets for road construction.
Performance Grade
PG 58-28 · PG 64-22 · PG 70-22
Graded by temperature range of use. Standard for road projects in North America and the Middle East.
Oxidized Bitumen
85/25 · 90/10 · 115/15
Blown bitumen with a high softening point. Used for roofing, waterproofing and industrial coatings.
Cutback Bitumen
RC · MC · SC
Bitumen thinned with a solvent for cold application, tack coats and surface treatments.
Typical Specifications
Penetration grade limits based on ASTM D946. The final specification is agreed in the contract and confirmed by the independent inspector's report.

Other standards such as EN 12591 and AASHTO M320 can apply by agreement. Cargo quality is established by independent inspection at the load port.

Commercial Terms
- Supply: bulk by heated bitumen tanker, or packed in steel drums, bags and flexitanks
- Payment: as agreed in the contract
- Inspection: independent inspector at load and discharge
- Documents: ICPO, SCO, CI, PPOP
- Handling: loaded hot at about 150 to 180°C, so heated storage and discharge are needed
