one of the cleanest and lightest fuels ----------
Marine fuels are specialized fuels used in ships, ranging from heavy residual oils to low-sulfur distillates and sustainable alternatives, designed to meet energy demands and environmental regulations.
Marine fuels, also known as bunker fuels, are petroleum-derived liquids formulated for use in ship engines. They are generally heavier and less refined than automotive or aviation fuels to provide the high energy density required for long voyages and large vessels. Historically, conventional marine fuels like Heavy Fuel Oil (HFO) contained high sulfur levels, contributing to significant air pollution, which has prompted stricter environmental regulations.

MARINE DIESEL OIL (MDO)
Marine Diesel Oil (MDO): A blend of distillates and a small fraction of residual fuel, lower in sulfur and viscosity than HFO, usable without preheating.
MDO is widely used in medium-speed marine engines and auxiliary engines, including those on cargo ships, tankers, ferries, and offshore support vessels. It is particularly favored for startup and shutdown phases of engines to prevent fuel line clogging and for vessels operating outside Emission Control Areas (ECAs) where the sulfur cap is 0.50% m/m. Its operational flexibility allows it to be used without complex fuel treatment systems, simplifying onboard fuel management.
MARINE GAS OIL (MGO)
Marine Gas Oil (MGO) is a refined fuel specifically designed for marine vessels. It is derived from the middle distillates of crude oil and is lighter, cleaner, and more refined than Heavy Fuel Oil (HFO). MGO is composed of hydrocarbons in the C10–C20 range, giving it chemical characteristics similar to those of automotive diesel. It typically contains low levels of sulphur, depending on the grade and local regulations.
MGO serves as the main fuel for smaller commercial vessels and as auxiliary fuel for larger tonnage. It is widely available globally at virtually every commercial bunker port. MGO is more expensive than VLSFO per tonne but has lower total consumption overhead (no heating, less separator maintenance, cleaner injectors). For small to mid-size vessels, the gap narrows significantly.
Vs. Other Marine Fuels: Cleaner and more refined than Heavy Fuel Oil (HFO) and Marine Diesel Oil (MDO), but significantly more expensive — making it the preferred choice where compliance, not cost, is the priority.
Usage: Used in medium and high-speed marine diesel engines, auxiliary engines, and vessels operating in environmentally sensitive or coastal zones where stricter emission rules apply.
